Background Nate McClain was commissioned in 1996 to create this large mural to honor Ozzie Smith retirement from the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team showing his trademark backflip in front of the St. Louis Arch. The painting was auctioned off at an Ozzie Smith Retirement event held September 28, 1996 at the America's Center with proceeds benefiting the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation. Nate was 23 years old when he created this artwork.
In 2005, the Gallery attempted to locate the owner of the painting which gained the attention of local St. Louis media. The owner of this painting remains unknown and was last thought to be in a private collection near Jefferson City, Missouri.
