Nate McClain (American, 1973 - 1997) Stormtrooper, 1997 Acrylic on Black Velvet 14 x 24 inches Courtesy of Kris Stormtrooper is an artistic interpretation of a Stormtrooper riding a Dewback painted on black velvet to commemorate the 1997 re-release of Star Wars Special Edition movies. He signed this painting as "Guido" which was a nickname of his friend Kris who was to sell the painting in front of the Esquire movie theater in St. Louis MO where Star Wars was playing. The plan ultimately fell through due to much partying that night. Nate was 23 years old when he created this artwork while living at the Washington Avenue Art Lofts in downtown St. Louis, Missouri. This is a painting Nate did of a Stormtrooper from Star Wars on black VELVET! Nate and some other Art Loft artists created velvet paintings for the Star Wars Special Edition movies that were released back in 1997, the year Nate died. Nate wanted me to sell these Star Wars velvet paintings at the movie theater on opening night. The plan was to have me wear my "Guido" afro, a black trench coat, and sunglasses while standing by a boombox playing salsa music to encourage people to buy the velvet's. To maintain their artistic reputation, the artists signed all the velvet paintings "Guido" instead of using their own names. The paintings never did make it to the movie theater due to WAY too much partying that night. The next day, Nate gave me the velvet painting he created which became the last painting he ever gave me.
