Nate McClain (American, 1973 - 1997) Rooster Tuba, 1990 Pastel 37 x 49 inches Courtesy of John Rooster Tuba is an original painting featuring a rooster with a tuba and the tuba would later reappear on his Totem Pole painting from college. This painting helped Nate win a full scholarship to attend the elite Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation Seminar in Colorado during the summer of 1990. He was one of 24 mid-west students to participate in the two-week visual art studio program. I think Nate brought the Rooster to life his senior year in high school. It took first in the show he entered it in. I believe this is the piece that helped him get his scholarship to SMSU. Our sophomore year in college he entered it in another show. Obviously he wasn't supposed to recycle an old work, but he did anyway. If you look in the upper right corner you can see where he signed. On the original it's apparent that he used liquid paper to change the date to be eligible for the new show. He won again. I can’t thank his father enough for giving me “The Rooster.”
